Why Is Sugar Produced?
Globally, sugar is primarily produced from sugarcane (78%) and sugar beet (22%). While sugar beet and sugarcane have long been recognized as traditional sugar sources, since the 1970s, starch-based sugars (such as high-fructose corn syrup) derived from crops like corn, wheat, and potatoes have emerged as alternative sugar sources.
Due to the geographical conditions of our country being unsuitable for sugarcane cultivation, sugar beet has taken precedence as the primary source for sugar production.
Despite the cost differences between producing sugar from sugarcane and sugar beet, many developed countries such as the United States, Germany, and France continue sugar production from sugar beet to ensure their food security, and sugar beet production is supported by government policies.
