How Much Sugar Beet Is Produced in Turkey?
Sugar beet production increased from 4,000 tons on 542 hectares in 1926 to 2.9 million tons on 130,000 hectares in 1961, and further rose to 21 million tons on 340,000 hectares in 2017. Due to high input costs, natural disasters, and diseases affecting sugar beet crops, it is estimated that in 2018 the cultivation area decreased to 300–301 thousand hectares, with production around 18.9 million tons. The highest sugar beet production in Turkey takes place in Konya, while more than 50 provinces, including Yozgat, Eskişehir, Aksaray, Kayseri, Afyonkarahisar, and Niğde, also contribute significantly to sugar beet cultivation.
Currently, sugar beet production is carried out within quotas set annually. Sugar factories sign contracts with farmers for sugar beet production in quantities corresponding to the quotas allocated to them for sugar production.
